MP REUNITES constituent with a family treasure

A cross celebrating the dedication and service of the late Councillor John Devaney, BEM, JP, to Egerton Park High School stood in the entrance hall to the school for many years.

Councillor Devaney had been a governor at the school for over 25 years prior to his death in December 1979 and had also served on Denton Urban District Council from 1954 and then went on to represent the Denton North East Ward on Tameside Council from 1973-1979.  He served as Mayor of Tameside from 1975-1976.

Maureen Schofield, the late Councillor Devaney’s daughter, approached Andrew to find out what had happened to the cross when Egerton Park High School was demolished to make way for the £24m new Denton Community College.  Andrew found out from the council that the cross had been put into archive and it has now been passed on to him to return to Mrs Schofield as a reminder of his service.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“I attended Egerton Park High School and remember the commemorative cross very well from my time there, mounted on the wall next to the Theatre entrance. I am very pleased that this cross in recognition of the great service Cllr Devaney gave to the people of Denton has been salvaged and I am delighted to be able to return it to his family.”
