DENTON & REDDISH MP SLAMS TORY policies for failing students and universities

Andrew Gwynne MP has slammed the Tory and Liberal Democrat government for trebling tuition fees, cutting student places and creating chaos in higher education.

In 2010, the government trebled tuition fees and claimed that these changes would make no difference to students and universities.  But one year on, it is clear that they couldn’t have got their higher education policy more wrong.  Overall applications to university have fallen by 15% compared to last year, with applications from the North West falling by 1,580 (8.34%). This will result in tens of thousands of people across England missing out on the opportunity for a higher education.

To make matters worse, the Government is slicing up universities through complicated number control policies that make it harder than ever for students to choose the right course for them.

Labour has proposed that the government should cut the tuition fee cap by a third to £6,000, and we would pay for this by scrapping the corporation tax cut on banks and asking the top 10% of graduates to pay more towards. We believe that this is fairer and will not disadvantage students from poorer backgrounds.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“It is appalling that applications from the North West have fallen so much, and shows that the Tory-led government is out of touch. They have completely mishandled fees policy, and they need to change course”.

Shabana Mahmood MP, Shadow Minister for Higher Education, said:

“Set against the backdrop of rising fees, and in a year when tens of thousands of people will miss out on a higher education, the Government is sending a clear message that it is abandoning students. Through their actions, they are also jeopardising all universities that generate so much for our economy today, and future generations will rely on to drive grown and maintain the UK’s global economic competitiveness”.
