CASH-strapped NHS chiefs are hiring hatchet men on £60,000 a year to sack HUNDREDS of key hospital workers, it has emerged.
They are bringing in “redundancy consultants” to oversee a brutal new cost-cutting blitz. The outside experts will be paid almost three times as much as the nurses they will be firing.
NHS officials launched the recruitment drive for the next phase of cuts which have seen 5,500 front-line jobs axed.
A hospital trust in Yorkshire is seeking two consultants on £250 a day each to head a “major downsizing and re-structure project” and oversee job cuts.
Shadow health minister Andrew Gwynne said:
“This out-of-touch government hands tax breaks to millionaires and P45s to nurses.”
A Department of Health spokesman insisted last night:
“The NHS must only use management consultants if no other alternative exists.”
