On Tuesday 11th December, Post Office Ltd announced the unexpected closure of Haughton Green Post Office due to circumstances beyond their control and stated that they were making every effort to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.
Since then, Denton MP, Andrew Gwynne, has continuously expressed his concern at the sudden closure and has called on Post Office Ltd to put immediate temporary measures in place until the Haughton Green branch can be re-opened.
Here is the content of an email from Post Office Ltd to Andrew Gwynne MP received late on Friday 14th December:
I have received an update this afternoon and we have now resolved the lease issues and a number of temporary agents have been put in touch with the lease holder to agree terms and hopefully reopen the branch.
Obviously no agreement has been reached yet so we are not in a position to confirm reopening but we should be in a better position on Monday when, hopefully, agreement will have been reached. I will update you as soon as I can.
Again, please pass on our apologies for the inconvenience caused to local customers who contact you but be assured that we are doing everything we can to restore service given the slightly complicated circumstances.
Senior Stakeholder Manager – North West
Andrew Gwynne MP said:
“I remain extremely concerned about the temporary closure of this vital community post office, which is causing a great deal of inconvenience to many of my constituents particularly in the run-up to Christmas.”
“Post Office Ltd has assured me that they are doing all they can to reinstate the service as soon as possible, and in their latest email to me, it looks like they are now close to some kind of resolution. However, I am not prepared for this to drag on, and if the matter is not resolved by early next week then I want Post Office Ltd to implement immediate temporary measures to maintain a service in Haughton Green village during this busy time.”
Councillor Claire Francis added:
“I too am deeply concerned about the closure of Haughton Green Post Office.
“Myself and my ward colleagues know what an important resource the Post Office is to the village and beyond. We will be working closely with Andrew Gwynne MP to ensure everything possible is done to reduce the inconvenience to residents of Haughton Green and that a service is reinstated as soon as possible”.
