A survey of over 1,000 Primary & Secondary School Teachers and School Sport Staff has found that:
- Over a third of schools have reported a decrease in participation since Government cut ring fenced funding for School Sport
- In the North West 39.6% of respondents have reported a decrease
- 68% of School Games Organisers and school sport staff have reported a decrease in participation
The Government have dismissed the survey saying that it “…includes [responses from] school sport partnerships staff and therefore cannot be taken seriously”
Commenting on the publication of the survey, Andrew Gwynne, Member of Parliament for Denton and Reddish, said:
“This survey shows that at the same time David Cameron was basking in the success of Team GB he was undermining school sport partnerships which are essential to delivering the Olympic Legacy among the current generation of school children.
“It is outrageous that the Government have said that the school sport staff that took part in this survey ‘cannot be taken seriously’; this is an insult to those working within sport who are trying to salvage a sporting legacy from the 2012 Games.”
