NORTH WEST HOSPITALS breach A&E waiting times – Jones and Gwynne

AnE-hospital-door-entry-sign21More and more hospitals in the North West are breaching the waiting time for Accident & Emergency Departments,  according to a North-West MP.

Figures obtained by Warrington North MP Helen Jones show that the University Hospital of South Manchester breached the target 25 times in 26 weeks,  Stockport NHS Trust 23 times and North Cumbria and Wirral Trusts 21 times.  Many other trusts had breaches in double figures.

imagesHelen Jones MP said:

“ These figures show that patients are paying the price for this government’s neglect of our NHS.  Instead of investing in patient care they are spending  money on an unnecessary reorganisation and frontline staff are losing their jobs.”

Andrew Gwynne MP,  Shadow Health Minister said:

“The crisis in A&E is getting worse every week.  The most recent official figures show that almost one-third of major A&E units missed the Government’s lowered waiting target, with patients waiting longer to be seen or held in the back of queuing ambulances.

“David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt are using the crisis to try to score political points by blaming GPs and a ten-year old contract, when they should be focused on tackling the underlying reason for the A&E crisis.

“By slashing social care to the bone the Government have caused the collapse of community help and support.  Older people in particular are finding the support they need to be able to stay in the home is just not available and so they can’t leave hospital.  Around a third of hospital beds are occupied by people who don’t need to be there, causing the pressure to build in A&E as patients can’t be moved on to the wards.

“Nurses, doctors and paramedics are doing their very best but are being severely stretched.  This is a growing crisis which won’t be solved by political posturing, Ministers need to urgently get a grip and sort out the real cause of the crisis.”

Helen Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Health on how many occasions the accident and emergency waiting time target has been breached in each hospital in the North West in the last 26 weeks for which information is available.

Anna Soubry (Minister): The number of times the accident and emergency (A&E) waiting time standard (95% within four hours) has been missed in the last 26 weeks (11 November 2012 to 5 May 2013) for each NHS trust in the north-west is shown in the following table:

    • We’ll be announcing some concrete proposals the Government could easily adopt that have come out of the A&E Summit we held yesterday. Will post about them when they’ve been formally announced.
