MEMORIAL TREE PLANTED to honour former Gorton MP

Tree Planting (ii)Andrew Gwynne MP has joined Cllr Vincent Ricci to plant a tree in Victoria Park in recognition of the many years of service that former MP Ken Marks gave to the local community.

Mr Marks served as a Councillor and Chair of Denton Urban District Council, and then MP for Manchester Gorton from 1967 to 1983, which then included both Denton and Audenshaw.

The original commemorative tree, which was planted 12 years ago by the Mayor of Tameside, Stephen Poole, died recently, and so local MP Andrew Gwynne made arrangements to plant a new tree. Mr Gwynne and Cllr Ricci were joined by local Councillors, friends and two nieces of Mr Marks.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“I am so glad we were able to arrange a new tree planting. Ken’s service to our community was exemplary, and it is an immense privilege to be able to follow in his footsteps.

“Ken had an extraordinary life. He rose from being a clerk on the railways at the age of fourteen to being an aide to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who attributed Ken’s victory in the 1967 by-election to his extraordinary personal qualities.

“Before he entered Parliament, Ken served as a captain in the Cheshire Regiment, in command of infantry units in the Middle East, Malta, Italy and North-West Europe, and then he served us in a different way, as a secondary school headmaster.

“Our community was very lucky to have Ken standing up for it through the heady days of the early 1980s, so it is only right that we mark his contribution once again.”Tree Planting (iv)
