SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY hailed a big success

Small Business Sat (ii)jpegAndrew Gwynne MP has thanked people who have shopped at local shops at the UK’s first ever Small Business Saturday help held this weekend.

The scheme follows on from the US where the annual event took place last weekend on what proved to be the busiest shopping day of the year.

On this side of the Atlantic, the campaign is more than just retail; it is about celebrating the vital role all our small firms play in our economy and within our local communities.

Over the weekend Andrew visited Denton’s Sweet Express – an independent milkshake bar and ice cream parlour on Manchester Road in Crown Point which opened 2013.

Andrew also visited Denton’s new ‘pop-up’ shop – just installed on Saturday; an initiative of Bill Jennings, Chair of Denton Town Team, and local architect. The shop is a modular building designed by students in a Dragon’s Den style competition. The unit is the first of up to 4 which will create new starter retail space on Stockport Road in Denton town centre. Sam Ward is set to open a traditional-style sweet shop called ‘the Tuck shop’ in this new space.

Andrew also visited The Village Card Shop in Haughton Green Village with local Councillor, Claire Francis and George Newton who works in his family business.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“This weekend was one of the busiest trading periods of the year as people packed into stores to buy Christmas presents for friends and loved ones.”

“Local shops and tradesmen rely on our custom, just as we rely on them to keep our high streets vibrant and exciting places to visit.

“So I would encourage everyone to do all they can to support local businesses not just for last weekend but whenever they need to buy something special or just do their everyday shopping.”

“I would also ask everyone to show their support for Small Businesses and sign up here : labour.org.uk/smallbizsatuk “
