A FAIR DEAL FOR RUGBY FANS: MP urges action on World Cup tickets

rugby-world-cup-2015-logoAndrew Gwynne MP has written to every Rugby Club in Denton and Reddish to urge their members to sign Labour’s petition to protect Rugby World Cup tickets from being hoovered up by organized gangs of ticket touts for resale on the secondary ticketing market.

Rugby World Cup tickets go on sale in the autumn and Labour wants them to go to genuine rugby fans and their families and friends.  Sadly the government has refused to designate the Rugby World Cup 2015 as an event of ‘National Significance’ and legislate to make it illegal to resell the tickets for profit, as the last government did for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Labour has offered to cooperate with the coalition government to get the legislation through in time for the tickets to go on sale.

Designating the games as an Event of National Significance would allow the organisers to offer the resale of tickets at face value through their recognised outlets and cancel tickets offered illegally.

Police intelligence shows that many of these gangs of touts are associated with people involved in drug and gun crime.  Failing to prevent them from profiting from these tickets is giving money to organised gangs of criminals.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“This shows how out of touch the government is with ordinary people.  The rugby world cup is the third largest sporting event in the world and 2.3 million tickets will go on sale later this year.  Unless the government acts now large numbers of these tickets will be bought by touts and genuine rugby fans; will only get to go if they can pay inflated prices.

“This Tory led government must act now to ensure genuine rugby fans aren’t priced out of attending the Rugby World Cup and illegal criminal gangs don’t profit from the sale of tickets.”
