Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, responding to the Healthwatch England survey, said:
“David Cameron systematically dismantled the alternatives to A&E, leaving people with nowhere else to go.
“Within days of the election, he scrapped Labour’s guarantee of a GP appointment with 48 hours and removed the funding that kept surgeries open at evenings and weekends. Now, surgeries close earlier and people phone the surgery at 9am to be told nothing is available for days. At the same time, he closed a quarter of NHS walk-in centres.
“David Cameron’s mismanagement of the NHS is to blame for the crisis in A&E today. Major A&Es have missed their target every week for more than six months. It is proof you cannot trust him with the NHS.”
