HOUSING ASYLUM SEEKERS: Gwynne slams the Leader of the House over refusal to address issue

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 15.53.41.pngAndrew Gwynne MP has criticised Chris Grayling, the Leader of the House of Commons, after having an important question about asylum seekers ignored.

Mr Grayling’s local authority houses only one asylum seeker, with the two local authorities covered by Mr Gwynne’s Denton and Reddish constituency housing 368 individuals.

The MP asked for a debate in the House of Commons to discuss the issue of asylum dispersal properties.

He suggested that Serco, the private contractor paid by the Government to house asylum seekers across the country to avoid placing too much strain on any one area, is avoiding having to apply for planning permission despite converting properties so that they can house multiple asylum seekers.

Grayling refused to address the question, suggesting that a debate will not happen.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“I was so disappointed by Chris Grayling’s refusal to address my question, but it is little wonder considering his constituency is barely affected by the asylum dispersal programme.

“My constituents deserve better than this from private companies paid out of our taxes. I will continue to push for the Government to take action to stop this practice.”
