Gwynne shows support for community pharmacies

Denton and Reddish MP, Andrew Gwynne, has backed the campaign for pharmacy funding as he joined community pharmacists in Parliament.

Recently Lloyds Pharmacy has announced it will close nearly 200 stores across England because of changes in government policy, with its parent company also blaming funding cuts and the apprenticeship levy. (1)

The number of staff affected by the closures was not confirmed but some pharmacists have taken to social media to warn of hundreds of job losses.

Many local pharmacists have expressed concern that these closures will result in the loss of wider important public health services such as providing flu jabs, blood pressure checks, sexual health services and help in giving up smoking.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“Continued cuts to community pharmacies risk increasing the pressure on our already stretched hospitals and Accident and Emergency departments.

“Our pharmacies are a crucial lifeline for communities and further closures would see vulnerable patients face lengthy visits to hospitals.”
