Denton Cricket Club is delighted to host the inaugural John Gwynne Classic in memory of the legendary darts commentator and local club member, who passed away earlier this year.

John Gwynne covered 20 world championships and 20 world matchplays for Sky Sports and was a familiar figure on the network. He was described by colleague and Soccer Saturday Presenter Jeff Stelling as ‘part of the greatest darts commentary team of all time’ alongside Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning.

The event at Denton Cricket Club has been organised and sponsored by Teirnan McCorkell and the pipeEASY brand. Teirnan is a keen darts player and also sponsors Denton Cricket Club. John’s son, Andrew Gwynne MP, has been asked to present prizes to the winners at the presentation ceremony, which is due to take place at the club at 6.00pm.

Commenting, Teirnan McCorkell said:

“I am a passionate darts player and have played for many years.  It’s an absolute pleasure to organise this event in memory of John and I hope it will become an annual event.  I encourage as many players as possible to come along and get involved. There are trophies for the winners and a free pint for all entrants.”

Andrew Gwynne added:

“I am delighted to have been asked to present the prizes for a sport which Dad loved, and which was so close to his heart throughout his life. He would be thrilled.

I want to thank Teirnan for organising and sponsoring the tournament and to Denton Cricket Club for hosting.  It promises to be a fantastic day.”
