Commenting on the news that P&O Ferries has sacked 800 seafaring staff with immediate effect, Andrew Gwynne said:

“The decision of P&O to sack all British staff with immediate effect is absolutely appalling. I am also incredibly concerned by reports of staff being dragged off boats by men in balaclavas to be immediately replaced by other workers.

Make no mistake, this is an assault on workers’ rights, and is not a sight I ever want to see in 21st century Britain. Workers deserve to be treated with respect, end of.

The same P&O workers who have now been fired and hauled off ship, are the same that kept us fed during the pandemic.

I stand by the workers and their unions in their fight, and call on the Government to uphold employment law to the fullest and take immediate action against P&O.”
