Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has responded to the news that Liz Truss will become the next Prime Minister after being elected as the new Tory leader.

Truss’ election win followed an 8-week long Conservative leadership contest. Truss received 57% of valid votes cast.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“This is not a new Government. It is simply the same faces rearranged. Liz Truss’ election represents deckchairs being moved as Great Britain sinks under the weight of Tory incompetence.

“All Britain has to show for the last 12 years of Tory Government is high prices, low wages, soaring NHS waiting lists and a cost-of-living crisis. Liz Truss has served as a Minister for 10 years. She has been Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary, Environment Secretary and Trade Secretary. For Liz Truss to claim that she can be trusted to deliver on anything is absurd.

“The fact of the matter is, the Tories have no plan to deal with the current challenges that the country faces. During the Tory leadership election, Liz Truss had more to say about cutting tax for huge corporations than the cost-of-living crisis. She’s described British workers as lacking skill and application, and is totally out-of-touch with the real issues facing ordinary people.

“Labour is the only party that has set out a proper plan to deal with the cost-of-living crisis. We would take action so that no one would pay a penny more on their energy bill this winter, deliver a Genuine Living Wage for working people and tackle the crisis facing our NHS. People across Denton and Reddish don’t need more of the same. They need a fresh start.”
