Responding to the news that Liz Truss has resigned, Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish said:

After just 44 days in Office, Liz Truss has stepped down as Prime Minister. Her historically brief tenure will be defined by a catastrophic mini-budget which crashed the economy, sent mortgage rates soaring and inflicted more misery on working people already facing a cost-of-living crisis.

Let’s be clear. None of this is acceptable. We have millions on NHS waiting lists, food bank use rising to historic levels, and the Tories swapping leaders around as if it’s all a game. Real people are suffering because of the Tory Party’s inability to govern. It is shameful.

The Tories have gambled with lives and livelihoods and taken for granted the sacred trust of the British people. They do not have the right to inflict another unelected Prime Minister on the people of Denton and Reddish. It is time for them to step out of the way, and let the Labour Party get on with the business of Governing.

Enough is enough. We need a General Election. Now.
