Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is supporting the introduction of the School Breakfast Bill.
The Bill is being introduced by fellow Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck (South Shields), which would give schools the funding needed to provide a nutritious free school breakfast to children at risk of hunger.
Food insecurity has increased dramatically during the Coronavirus crisis and many thousands of children are going without breakfast.
Evidence shows that a good breakfast increases the ability of children and young people to learn.
Andrew Gwynne said:
“This is a really important piece of legislation. Far too many children are going hungry and this has a really negative impact not just on their health and wellbeing, but also their education.
“The current crisis is sadly widening inequalities between poorer and richer pupils and this Bill is a very practical way of tackling this.
“I fully support Emma in bringing forward this Bill and hope that the Government ensure that it gets a proper hearing in Parliament.”
