Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has written to Manchester City Council in support of plans for a new arena on the Etihad Campus in East Manchester.
If the arena gets planning permission, it will be the largest indoor arena in the UK with capacity for 23,500 people. It could host around 120 music and sports events per year.
It is expected to create more than 3000 jobs, involving 70 companies. There will be training for 100 apprentices and trainees, encompassing 2,800 apprenticeship and trainee weeks during the construction.
The arena would be the latest stage of the regeneration of East Manchester, which began apace with the Velodrome and 2000 Olympic bid, the successful 2002 Commonwealth Games, and Manchester City FC moving to the area and developing the campus.
Andrew Gwynne said:
“I am strongly in favour of the proposal for a new indoor arena in East Manchester.
“Not only would it attract business and exciting live events to the city region, but people living in areas adjoining East Manchester – such as west Tameside – would also benefit from the many new jobs created.
“These are exciting plans and I hope that the arena gets the go-ahead.”
