Denton MP, Andrew Gwynne, has welcomed the news that Tameside Council have formally secured the Compulsory Purchase powers to enable the redevelopment of the former Oldham’s Batteries site in Denton Town Centre.

Developer, Langtree Group, secured planning permission in 2004 for a new ‘Denton Retail Park’ including 165,000 sq ft of retail floor space (including mezzanines), 9,000 sq ft of A3 restaurant space, a 500 space car park and a new link road (linking Ashton Road with Hyde Road).

Langtree also have a separate planning permission for new housing on the smaller plot of land on the opposite side of Edward Street.

But the retail plans stalled when ransom strips of land were bought up by rival developers preventing the link road from being constructed, which was a pre-requisite to the shopping development being able to be built.

After lengthy negotiations failed, Langtree asked Tameside Council to use its Compulsory Purchase Order powers to buy out the remaining obstacles. A CPO public inquiry was heard last year and permission for the CPO was granted. The statutory period of objection to the CPO has now passed without any objection having been received meaning the CPO is now legally in place.

Andrew met with Langtree recently about complaints he has received regarding the poor condition of the site, when he was updated on the progress of the CPO.

“It is a positive step forward that the CPO has now been granted. It means Langtree can start to properly market the site to potential end-users with some certainty their scheme can now be delivered.

“This is the missing link in our town centre regeneration, and is long overdue. It is clear that the scheme can build on the success of the Crown Point North and Morrisons schemes, as well as hopefully bringing more people into the town centre to support the many small independent traders too.

“I am also delighted that Langtree – as part of their new marketing strategy – will be clearing the site up and erecting new hoardings and adverts to promote their development. Local people have been incredibly patient as the site is currently an eyesore on two prominent routes through the centre of the town, so this will be a big improvement while the company markets and then develops the site.”
