Untitled-188Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, responding to the publication of the latest A&E performance data by NHS England, said:

“Last week, more patients waited on trolleys in A&E corridors than at any other time this winter. Despite thousands fewer people going to A&E departments that week, the number of patients waiting hours on end to be seen remains high too.

“The Government’s target was missed by two-thirds of hospitals again – far higher than earlier this winter – whilst the national target for major A&Es has been missed every week for six months.

“David Cameron is still refusing to accept that he’s unleashed chaos in England’s A&Es. His arrogance is a danger to patients. Cameron’s A&E crisis is not going away – he must face facts and get a grip. Patients deserve better.”

  • 5,390 patients waited between 4 and 12 hours on a trolley for a ward bed. Highest number since April 2013.
  • 22,937 patients waited over 4 hours to be seen. Second highest figure since April 2013 – after 23,606 in the week ending 9th February 2014.
  • 100 of England’s 144 hospital trusts with major A&Es missed the target of treating 95% of patients within 4 hours.
