A child taking asthma drugsAndrew Gwynne MP has called for further action on asthma hospitalisation following figures that show Tameside and Glossop CCG and Stockport CCG have both been ranked in the top 5th in England for emergency hospital admissions for adults with asthma, at 17th and 35th respectively.

Asthma affects over 5 million people in the UK, and while those with severe asthma are at highest risk of dying from asthma, many people die from mild-moderate asthma, which should be controllable with effective self-management and good routine care.

An estimated 75% of hospital admissions are avoidable and most asthma deaths are preventable. Every day in the UK, 3 people die from their asthma.

Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation are working together to support the Respiratory Health Parliamentary Group’s inquiry into asthma care, which will make recommendations to the Government and NHS England.

Looking in depth at two respiratory conditions (asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), the inquiry aims to understand the circumstances surrounding respiratory deaths and identify:

  • where the system is failing;
  • the barriers to good practice; and
  • what policy changes are needed to reduce respiratory deaths.

Andrew Gwynne MP said:

“Now that Asthma UK, British Lung Foundation and the Parliamentary Group on Respiratory Health are working together to understand the circumstances surrounding respiratory deaths , we have an opportunity to crack down on preventable hospitalisations due to asthma.

“I fully support the review, and I hope we can use it to help our local Clinical Commissioning Groups work better with our local councils and health services to ensure fewer people need to go to hospital.

“Better understanding amongst health professionals and local policymakers is essential for improving care and advice for asthma sufferers.”
