Andrew Gwynne, Shadow Health Minister and MP for Denton and Reddish, has visited a new Slimming World group at Denton Labour Club to meet an inspiring local woman whose weight loss means she now qualifies for a life-changing double lung transplant.
Mr Gwynne was keen to meet Diane Lomas, 49, after hearing how she was recently told that she needed a double lung transplant but couldn’t be put forward for surgery because of her weight. The news led to her joining Slimming World and losing 2st to qualify for the operation.
Diane’s genetic lung condition means that her lungs currently only function at 20 per cent, meaning she has to use oxygen 24 hours-a-day. However after losing weight by regularly attending the local Slimming World group and making healthy lifestyle changes, her specialist has now given her the go-ahead to have the operation and she is awaiting an organ donor.
As well as meeting Diane, Andrew Gwynne also met Slimming World Consultant Adele O’Neill, who herself lost 2st which helped her to conceive naturally after suffering fertility problems. Obesity is high on the public health agenda in Tameside, after figures released by Public Health England last year showed that out of 326 local authorities, the area has the 33rd highest proportion of residents who are overweight. The local MP has spoken out on the need to give people and families more support.
Andrew Gwynne MP said:
“I am delighted to have been invited to visit the new Slimming World group on Friday to meet group leader, Adele, and Diane, whose weight loss has now made it possible for her to undergo a double lung transplant.
“I think it’s hugely important that people seeking to lose weight can get the support that they need locally.”
Diane Lomas said:
“I could never have achieved what I have on my own and I’m so thankful I didn’t have to. I want fellow sufferers receiving similar news to me to know that if they need to lose weight to qualify for surgery then I’m proof that you can do it. You can be in charge of improving your health and your future – just like I have!”
Slimming World Consultant Adele said:
“I know that Diane had a very important reason for losing weight, but her commitment and success really stood out. I’ve never felt as proud as I did that day when Diane texted to say that she’d achieved the weight loss she needed to be added to the transplant list.
“She’s such an inspiration to all of the members of our group and I know how life changing her transplant will be, so if you haven’t already registered on the NHS Organ Donor Register please consider doing so.”
