Andrew Gwynne MP has visited the foodbank at St Mary’s Church, Haughton Green, to see how they are coping with the extra winter pressures.
St. Mary’s Church and Community Foodbank was the first to be opened in Tameside, and everything is donated by local residents and churches.
Andrew Gwynne MP said:
“The charities, churches, community groups and volunteers who run foodbanks across the country show us Britain at its best. These facilities really shouldn’t be needed, but I am pleased that local residents and businesses are making sure food gets to those who most need it this Christmas.
“Many people feel Christmas is a chance to take a few days off. Others see it as being about spending time with family and friends. But it will always be linked to its Christian provenance, and this is the time of year we must think about – and act on – the issues facing those who need some extra help.”
